Periodontology is a specialist field in dentistry which pays close attention to the supporting structures of the teeth and the effects of disease which compromise those structures. Much of gum disease originates from a build-up of bacteria and if untreated may lead to the kind of inflammation that can result in loss of gum and/or bone which affects the integrity of the tooth or teeth which can lead to tooth loss.
